What the Ice Cream Ball is all about...
|
|
I scream, you scream, we all scream for...Anyone? Anyone? That's right, whether you're 8 or 80, when someone says "ice cream" you come screaming like a raving lunatic!
Now you can have it anywhere, anytime you like. No more emotional rollercoaster as you strain to hear whether the sound of Greensleeves is getting closer or farther away! No more pushing small children aside as you chase the truck! The Ice Cream Ball gives you the cold creamy hit that you crave with some mandatory family fun thrown in.
It couldn't be simpler. Just pour the ingredients in one end and put ice and rock salt (don't worry, it doesn't get mixed in) in the other and you're ready to rock 'n roll! As you shake, rattle and roll the Ice Cream Ball, the rock salt and ice experience a thermodynamic reaction and super-cool the ingredients.
After 20 minutes of play, give or take a few variables including how vigorous your "action", you've got yourself over half a litre of smooth, cold, creamy homemade ice cream...and you did it the environmentally friendly way, with no batteries and not a single volt of electricity.
Once you've mastered the art (pour, play, eat - yep, got it) you can then branch out into creating your own custom-designed flavours! Just add your favourite flavours – berrys, nuts, chocolate, Worcestershire sauce, whatever - before loading the mix into the ball.
The Ice Cream Ball makes a great family gift - preferably to a family you're in, so you benefit too! It's pure genius – so you don't have to be.

Ice Cream Making Tips - Any kind of cream or milk mix will work, but thinner mixtures take longer to freeze. Using all double cream will result in a richer and creamier ice cream yield. If you're making a low fat ice cream, adjust the recipe accordingly. Sugar-substitute is also acceptable.
Experiment with your flavours as virtually anything goes (that's part of the fun) - mint, peanut butter, chopped/melted chocolate bars, chopped fruit, berries, crumbled biscuits, honey, syrup, baileys, milkshake powder etc.
How does it work? Time for a quick lesson in the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which states that the differences between systems in contact with each other tend to even out: i.e. the (cold) ice surrounding the (warmer) cream mixture will begin to melt. For ice to melt, heat has to be drawn from somewhere and in this case the melting ice absorbs heat from your ingredients and gradually lowers the temperature of the mix until it starts to freeze.
Now, without any salt added to the ice the cooling effect would be slower and the ice/ingredients would gradually reach an equilibrium slightly above the freezing point of water. This isn't cold enough to turn your ingredients into ice cream, for which you need temperatures below -37°F (-3°C).
By adding rock salt to the ice it makes a substance with a freezing point lower than water. This means that the ice and salt mixture must take even MORE heat from its surroundings in order to melt: the whole process accelerates and the temperature quickly drops to around -50°F (-10°C), which rapidly cools and turns your ingredients into a tasty serving of ice cream!
Please note: Never kick or drop your Ice Cream Ball. Use a wooden or plastic spoon as metal can scratch the container.
