A POP Story of Funko
Mike Becker, a toy enthusiast from Snohomish, Washington, developed Funko in 1998. For lack of a cheap Big Boy coin bank, he started making his own coin banks with the help of the Big Boy Restaurants franchise in Michigan. Despite the coin banks failing to sell, Funko was able to stay in business after licencing the Austin Powers bobblehead rights and selling 80,000 units. After this, Funko began selling characters including the Grinch, Tony the Tiger, and the Cheerios mascot, the honeybee. Brian Mariotti, Funko's current CEO, purchased the company from Becker in 2005 and expanded the company's licenced product lines dramatically. Pop! Vinyl figurines were introduced by Funko in 2011. Sales of more than $20 million were made by the company by 2012.
